Everton manager David Moyes admits he is having to construct a new side from resources within the cash-strapped club but is pleased with the way it is shaping up.

Having sold Mikel Arteta, Jermaine Beckford and Ayegbeni Yakubu and allowed Joseph Yobo to go out on loan the Scot was only able to bring in striker Denis Stracqualursi and winger Royston Drenthe on temporary deals. That has meant he has had to use more back-up players but he has been rewarded with some promising cameos from teenagers Ross Barkley and Apostolos Vellios."I'm having to look to try to build a new side from what we've got, not necessarily with lots of new players," said Moyes. "I need to get myself in the right position in the league but also need to see where we can take it on and try to find the new (Tim) Cahills."Barkley, 17, has already impressed in all four of the Toffees' matches so far while Vellios, 19, made his first appearance of the season - and only the fourth of his Everton career - as a substitute in the 2-2 draw with Aston Villa. The Greek youngster was only on the pitch for five minutes on Saturday but almost scored twice.Moyes added: "If people hadn't seen the Greek boy (Vellios) who came on they'd say 'Boy oh boy, you're not the worst are you? You've done okay and were unlucky not to get one or two goals'. And we have another couple who are similar to that."The problem is if you are trying them out in the Premier League it's a risk and at the moment I'm risking them.

"Ideally you would go and get them Championship experience so they know what the speed is like and the game is like and what they have to do. But because of our numbers we have to use these boys either in the team or to fill out the bench."
Moyes also had praise for midfielder Marouane Fellaini, who at 23 has been one of the team's key players for a couple of seasons now.

"I've said all along I think Fellaini is a really good player in the Premier League," Moyes said on evertonfc.com. "And he's young. He's only 23 now so you think what he could be like when he's 26 or 27, but we think he's already come on a lot."

Roberto Mancini insisted his Manchester City side still need to improve - despite easing to a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Wigan

Sergio Aguero's brilliant hat-trick secured the win while City, inspired by David Silva in midfield, could afford to see Carlos Tevez miss a penalty and still take three points.

Mancini said: "We had 15 chances in the first half and we scored only one goal - this is a problem because the game can change any moment."
He added: "Next time it's better if we close out the game in the first half.
"We need to improve because we have started the season very well but the season will be long. If we want to arrive at the end of the season still at the top we need to improve."

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez claimed his players had shown City too much respect.
Martinez said: "I am disappointed with the performance. We showed them too much respect.

"With the quality they have on the pitch and the size of the squad will allow them to be competitive in every competition but in one game you are only playing against 11 bodies.

"We played the occasion too much, we played their squad, when we only had to focus on the 11 players in front of us. We could have hurt Man City a lot more.

"From our point of view it is a real lesson but we still did a few good things that we are going to take into future games."

Defender Gael Clichy is confident Manchester City can make a big impact in their maiden Champions League campaign.

City make their long-awaited entrance in Europe's elite club competition on Wednesday as they take on Italian side Napoli in their Group A opener at the Etihad Stadium. Roberto Mancini's expensively-assembled side have made a flying start to their domestic campaign and summer signing Clichy expects that to continue.

The 26-year-old former Arsenal player said: "I am lucky enough to have been able to play in a few Champions League games for Arsenal, which was good, but I am aware it's a new competition for this club. The confidence is there, and we go into this competition with no fear."

"It's not only me who has played in it before - Yaya (Toure) has won it.

"For us it may be one more game, like many we have played in the past, but we have to be aware it's a big part of City's season this year.

"We have to make sure that if there is something we can bring in terms of experience - and it may just be a little thing - that we bring it.

"Then maybe we can make the kind of statement in the Champions League we have been making since the start of the season."

City will also play German giants Bayern Munich and Spanish side Villarreal during the group stage. The group is considered one of the toughest in the competition and Clichy has brushed aside suggestions Napoli, third in Serie A last year, will be the easiest of the opponents.

"That is the view of people who don't really know about football," said the Frenchman. "They are a strong side, and if you are at this stage of the competition and in the group, it means you have qualities.
"Champions League is a totally different kind of football."

Button it, Torres! Chelsea boss raps star striker over attack on team-mates.

Fernando Torres faces a reprimand from Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas over public criticism in which he accused his team-mates of being 'old' and 'slow'.
Villas-Boas is investigating the comments, which appeared on Torres' official website last weekend and were taken from an interview he gave in Spain.
'We are going in-depth to regain the tape of that interview,' said Villas-Boas. 'He says he didn't say that. We will see if things play exactly as they are in that interview.'
It is another setback for the misfiring £50million striker, who has scored only once in nine months since arriving from Liverpool.
Villas-Boas insisted he would not hesitate to punish a player for public criticism. 'If it's unauthorised, I'd fine him,' he said but, as this was an authorised interview, the striker can expect to escape with a verbal rap.
In the interview for the La Liga website, later translated for the English page of the player's website, the Spaniard said: 'The kind of player Chelsea has, an older player who plays very slow, who has a lot of possession, and that's what the club is trying to change now. It's normal that it takes some time.'
He goes on to claim the signing of Juan Mata will ease the problem, saying: 'The arrival of Mata is going to give another pace to the team. That's something Chelsea lacks nowadays.'
Villas Boas added: 'People have different views on different things. It's nothing abnormal in that situation. Maybe we just have to speak about that situation and he has to see our view as well.'
Torres' travails show no sign of abating, the 27-year-old losing his place in the side for Saturday's Barclays Premier League win at Sunderland, having also failed even to make the bench for Spain's European Championship qualifier against Liechtenstein.
Villas-Boas did not offer Torres an explanation, having admitted 48 hours earlier that he would not hesitate to drop the striker if it benefited the team.
'I just made the changes,' said Villas-Boas today as he pondered whether to recall Torres for Tuesday's Champions League opener against Bayer Leverkusen. 'I think any player who's not part of the squad or the selected players is not happy.
'I'm glad because maybe you can stimulate them to go one step further, or motivate them a bit more.'

Cautious United leave Ferdinand at home for Champions League clash at Benfica.

Rio Ferdinand will miss Manchester United's opening Champions League game against Benfica in Lisbon.
Ferdinand was not in the 19-man squad that flew to Portugal on Tuesday morning, meaning United were without their first-choice central defensive pairing as Nemanja Vidic is currently missing with a calf problem.
There was no place either for Federico Macheda or Mame Biram Diouf, who scored twice for the reserves in their win over Fulham, but Jonny Evans and Patrice Evra shrugged off hip and knee knocks picked up at Bolton on Saturday. It is not thought Ferdinand has suffered a fresh injury. However, after making his first appearance in a month during the 5-0 romp at the Reebok, and with Chelsea due at Old Trafford on Sunday, Sir Alex Ferguson is not wanting to take any chances with the 32-year-old, whose fitness record has been patchy over the past few years. With Ferdinand out, it is likely to mean a move into central defence for Phil Jones, outstanding at full-back on Saturday, who would be making his debut in the competition.
Michael Owen, fresh from watching his horse Brown Panther finish second in the St Leger, was also named, although if changes are made to Ferguson's attacking line-up, last season's joint Golden Boot winner, Dimitar Berbatov, would appear to have more of a claim.
Ferguson has suggested he will rely on experience, which could be good news for Darren Fletcher, Park Ji-sung and Ryan Giggs, who have been reduced to peripheral roles so far this term.
The United boss must also decide whether to hand Anders Lindegaard his competitive debut, or stick with David de Gea, who has been steadily improving after a shaky start to his Red Devils career.
It is less than four months since Ferguson's team were put in their place by Barcelona in the final at Wembley. However, as comprehensive as that defeat was, Michael Carrick refuses to beat himself up about it. 'The Champions League final doesn't still hurt,' said the 30-year-old. 'It was disappointing because we lost the final but it wasn't a massive failure.
'I haven't watched it again. I went on my holidays and focused on this season. You have to accept they were good. It is up to us to be better.'

McIlroy jealous of the amateurs as Walker Cup gets underway at Royal Aberdeen.

Rory McIlroy has written a personal good luck letter to Britain and Ireland’s Walker Cup team telling them he is ‘jealous’ of what they have to look  forward to when they take on the Americans at Royal Aberdeen this weekend.
The 22-year-old with the millions, the major and the celebrity girlfriend wrote: ‘Here I am in Holland playing in the rain and you guys are about to have one of the best weekends of your life. That’s how I remember my Walker Cup experience and I didn’t play on a winning side! I’m jealous. I hope it all goes well and look forward to you lifting the Walker Cup on Sunday.’
McIlroy’s letter was one of a number read out by home captain Nigel Edwards on Friday as he prepared his team for an uphill task against a strong American side.
World No 1 Luke Donald, who won seven points out of eight in his two Walker Cup appearances, Lee Westwood and Open champion Darren Clarke also took time out to compose their good luck messages.
World No 2 Westwood told the team: ‘You are already ahead of me since I never played in the Walker Cup but I know from Ryder Cup matches how special these team events are in golf. Remember to play your own game and don’t worry about the opposition.’
One man who will not be doing that is self-assured Englishman Tom Lewis, playing in his last amateur event before joining the  professional ranks on Monday. He will partner Scot Michael Stewart against Peter Uihlein and Harris English Saturday’s opening foursomes match.

Tamas faces three-match ban over 'elbow' on Vaughan during Carrow Road draw

Gabriel Tamas faces a three-match ban after being charged by the Football Association.
The West Brom defender appeared to elbow Norwich debutant James Vaughan in the final minutes of the 1-1 draw at Carrow Road.
The Canaries player was fuming after the incident which left him needing to see a plastic surgeon after the match.
A statement on the FA website read: 'The FA has today charged West Bromwich Albion defender Gabriel Tamas with violent conduct following an incident in his side's game at Norwich City.
'The Romania defender was involved in an incident with City's James Vaughan towards the end of the fixture at Carrow Road on Sunday 11 September.
'Tamas has until 6pm on Tuesday 13 September to respond to the charge. If the player admits the charge he may accept an automatic three match sanction.
Asked if he thought Tamas's swing of an arm was deliberate, Norwich boss Paul Lambert said: 'Yeah, it's not great. You've got to get big moments in games right. We never got that big moment. The penalty given against was pretty soft, especially considering what happened to James. It's a penalty.
'I went to see the referee. He didn't see it but you'd think someone would have. James has gone to see the plastic surgeon. It's a bad one. It's gone right through his lip. It's not one you can just stitch up. He's got a real nasty gash.'
West Brom manager Roy Hodgson disagreed with Lambert's take on events.
'It was an unintentional elbow,' he said. 'It was unfortunate. I would be disappointed if Tamas faces disciplinary action - I don't think that would be necessary.'
Vaughan later tweeted: 'Back home! plastic surgeon sorted me out! think i will have 2 bite my lip over the 'incident' o wait already done that!'
West Brom confirmed they would make a decision on Tuesday over whether to accept or contest the charge.

Will the Kurt-JJ feud continue?

Jimmie Johnson was less than pleased with some of what happened Saturday night at Richmond. After the race, Kurt Busch made it clear he isn't happy with Johnson.

Kurt Busch would have you believe that he has gotten inside the head of five-time defending Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson heading into the Sprint Cup Chase.
Then why was it Busch who seemingly lost his head after Saturday night's regular-season finale at Richmond International Raceway? (Hope that question was acceptable, Tony Stewart.)
The Penske Racing driver was more out of control during the postrace news conferences than he was on the track when he resumed his ongoing feud with Johnson, spinning him out on Lap 185, which later resulted in retaliation.
It began with a simple but legitimate question by a reporter on pit road who asked Busch if he or Johnson could win the championship as long as they continued their rough stuff on the track.
Actually, the reporter got only halfway through the question when, according to witnesses, Busch interrupted, gave a pointed answer and walked away. As Busch left, the reporter said it was a legitimate question because of incidents at Infineon Raceway, Chicagoland, New Hampshire and Pocono over the past two seasons.
That logic apparently didn't sit well with Busch. According to reports by those on the scene, the driver turned and began a profanity-laced tirade at the reporter, then approached him before being physically restrained by members of his team.
It didn't end there. Inside the media center Busch was asked by another reporter -- the one Stewart berated on Friday for asking what he called a not-so-original question -- about his comment that "I know we're inside his [Johnson's] head."

Butto blast at Schuey

JENSON BUTTON slammed Michael Schumacher for his ruthless track tactics in a bruising Italian Grand Prix yesterday.
Brit ace Button finished second as Sebastian Vettel won to move closer to becoming the youngest double champion in history.
But he was critical of Schumacher's driving as he swerved to block Button's McLaren team-mate Lewis Hamilton during their battle for third.
The Frome flier, who later overtook the German's Mercedes with a stunning move, said: "I thought he was moving quite a bit with Lewis.
"I had such a good run on Michael and came on him so fast that he couldn't move a lot. It would have been very dangerous.
"But with Lewis he was moving across to the left and then to the right, which I don't think was all that bright.
"Fair enough, he was coming out of a corner on to the straight but why didn't he keep to the left.
"He always went to the right, then left and back to the right — not exactly what we agree is right.
"One move. Maybe he has just lost his memory."
Seven-time world champ Schumacher, 42, was advised by his team chief Ross Brawn to leave room after the FIA told Mercedes they were watching the 200mph duel.
Hamilton told the team over the radio that German star Schumacher was moving but stayed coy afterwards by saying: "That's racing."
The 2008 champ has been criticised by several former racers for being too aggressive this season after a clutch of collisions.
Hamilton added: "Once I got past Michael, I had fun trying to catch up Vettel."

Maradona: You can win it all at City,Sergio

DIEGO MARADONA has told Sergio Aguero he has found the perfect club in Manchester City — and can win the lot at the Etihad.
The Argentina icon had been concerned for some time that his son-in-law was wasting his talent with Atletico Madrid.

So he was delighted when Aguero made his £35million switch to Manchester in the summer.

The Argy hitman has already notched six Premier League goals, including a hat-trick in Saturday's 3-0 win over Wigan.

Tomorrow night, City make their Champions League debut against Maradona's old club Napoli.

And Maradona believes Roberto Mancini's side can enjoy the kind of trophy-laden era he had in the late 80s with the Serie A club.

Maradona, now coach of Dubai-based Al Wasl, revealed: "I told Aguero he needed a team that would support him.

"He needed one that meant he can play in the Champions League, can play in very important championships.

"People at Atletico Madrid said I was a fool but I told them this foolish person is not that much of a fool.

"Aguero is playing in a team at Manchester City where he is going to fight for everything."

Despite forging a reputation as one of the hottest properties in Europe, Aguero did not enjoy much success with Atletico.

They won the Europa League in 2010 and followed it with the UEFA Super Cup — but Maradona felt his son-in-law was too good to stay at the Vicente Calderon.

Maradona added: "It was not fair, with respect to his team-mates at Atletico Madrid, for Aguero to be playing for a team who were not competing for the big championships.

"It was worrying me that he may have played for many years for Atletico Madrid. For that time they would only have one star, and didn't do much in Europe.

"Now Aguero is playing at a place he deserves."

Meanwhile, team-mate Samir Nasri reckons City's diddy men can dazzle in Europe.

Aguero is 5ft 7ins while playmaker David Silva — who has also had a sizzling start to the season — is just an inch taller.

Nasri, a modest 5ft 10in, said: "Aguero and Silva, they're not tall. They are like me — they have quick feet, good technique and they like to play. I love that kind of player.

"When you're playing with players like this, you're always looking to have a connection with them.
"I'm just happy to be there in the same dressing room.

"I have no doubts City can win one of the big trophies this season.

"I think we are the biggest challengers to United."

Arsene Wenger fear Euro KO blow

ARSENE WENGER admits that NONE of England's Champions League clubs can match Barcelona or Real Madrid.
The Arsenal boss, whose side face Dortmund in tonight's Group F opener, said: "Two teams are above the rest this season, Real Madrid and Barcelona.
"The rest have to catch up during the season. The competition inside our country has become harder. And outside, Barcelona and Real Madrid have much more financial power.
"For us, it's a new start because we are a new squad.
"And what is at stake during the group stages for us is to show that we can go through.
"They have shown they can win it so, at the moment, it's too early to compare us to them.
"And it's a bit early to compare Manchester City with Barca.
"That does not take any credit away from Man City but Barca's players have won the World Cup and the team has won two Champions Leagues in the last three seasons. So I think it's too early for City."
Wenger revealed he has broken his Arsenal record by signing 6ft 6in defender Per Mertesacker.
Asked about whether he had signed a taller player before, 6ft 4in Wenger said: "No. I don't like to do that.

"Usually, I look at the quality of the player and not at the size. Because we play a very technical game, I usually choose smaller players."

Aussies hail freakish BOD

Irish great is the man the Wallabies fear

Australia star Adam Ashley-Cooper has described Brian O'Driscoll as a "freak" ahead of Saturday's massive World Cup showdown at Eden Park in Auckland.
Ashley-Cooper was told as a teenager to study the Irish captain in order to learn how an outside centre should play. Now the 27-year-old utility back is hoping to line up against O'Driscoll this weekend.
"Brian is a freak. He created a pretty painful result for us at Croke Park a couple of years ago when he scored under the posts to draw the game. He's achieved so much. All of us in the Aussie camp respect him so much.
"On a good day he's one of the best in the world. We're hoping he has a quiet night on Saturday. Absolutely he represents the same threat that he did five years ago.
"Players like Brian turn up in arenas like this. It's a World Cup and he's here to play. Back in 2002 I was told by my coach to study Brian O'Driscoll because he was the best at what he did at 13.

England duo scoop ICC awards

Dhoni honoured for his sportsmanship during Trent Bridge Test

Jonathan Trott has been named the International Cricket Council's Cricketer of the Year, pipping England team-mate Alastair Cook to the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy Award.
Trott received the honour at a dinner at London's Grosvenor House Hotel after a stunning 12 months that saw him score over 1,000 runs in both Test and One-Day cricket.
The Warwickshire batsman scored 445 runs in last winter's Ashes series alone, though his highlight happened to come in the field during that tour.
Asked for his favourite memory, Trott had no hesitation nominating his run-out of Australia's Simon Katich on day one of the second Test in Adelaide.
"That run-out in the first over of the game - it was the first time I've ever got to run around a cricket field like a football striker scoring a goal," he said.
"That was the best highlight for me - although I have to say as a team Melbourne (where England retained the Ashes) was special."
The South African-born right-hander had initially been on a four-man short-list that also included India's Sachin Tendulkar and Hashim Amla of South Africa.

FA firm over drugs stance

Football Association defended their anti-doping rules

The Football Association has defended their rules on anti-doping, following accusations made about their failure to clamp down on drugs.

An investigation conducted by Channel 4's Dispatches programme, revealed the names of a number of players who had failed tests.
The FA's policy at the moment is to keep private the names of players who fail tests for social drugs out of competition, although punishments of up to six months for first-time offenders can be handed out.
The FA want players to be allowed privacy to seek help for their problems, where required, and stress there is no requirement on them to identify those who have failed tests for recreational drugs away from game time.
The FA stress they are working to eliminate illegal substances of all types, and underlined that players who test positive for social drugs will be punished, even if their names are not disclosed.
Anyone who fails a test for a performance-enhancing drug is named, whether they are tested in or out of competition.

Nadal heaps praise on Novak

Spaniard gracious in defeat after Flushing Meadows final

Rafael Nadal insists Novak Djokovic's achievements this year will be "probably impossible to repeat" after losing his US Open crown to the world number one.
Djokovic won a pulsating final at Flushing Meadows in four sets to claim an incredible third grand slam title of the year and fourth of his career.
The Serbian has now beaten Nadal in six finals this season and the 6-2 6-4 6-7 (3-7) 6-1 victory means he has won 64 of his 66 matches in 2011.
Nadal, who looked to be back in the match after winning the third set on a tie-break, said: "Obviously I'm disappointed but this guy is doing unbelievable things so congratulations Novak and your team for everything.

"What you did this year is probably impossible to repeat.
"I try my best in every moment, these kind of matches are very difficult, it brings your body to the limit.
"I tried to play great but he always makes a fantastic comeback. That's tennis, I tried my best and am happy with what I did. I ran to every ball and fought until the last ball.
"This year I lost a lot of finals against him but I won a lot in the past and the only thing I can do is try my best every day to keep improving and for sure I will come back next year and try my best."

China keeps slim hope despite win over Thailand

Tuesday, September 6, 2011

JINAN - The Chinese national women's soccer team were put into a dangerous situation for the 2012 London Olympic Games after three mediocre matches of the Asian Qualifying Tournament.
China collected merely five points after the first three games: two fruitless draws with South Korea and DPR Korea, and a win over Thailand were really not enough strong performance for the hosts on their way to London. China must beat Australia and world champions Japan in the next two games to secure a place at London games.

"I felt uncomfortable during the past three games, but at least we are still alive," said China coach Li Xiaopeng after the 2-0 victory over Thailand.

"We still have the chance to walk out of the swamp, no matter what kind of process it would like to be. Luckily there are no red cards and match bans. We can have all the players ready for the next game."
The top two of the six teams may advance to the Olympic finals, and as the tournament regulations rule that if two or more teams finish with same points at last, the rankings will be decided first by the greatest number of points obtained in the matches between the teams concerned, Australia's qualifying hopes are rather small as they lost to both DPR Korea and Japan. DPR Korea will almost certainly beat Thailand to gain at least 10 points at last, and as Australia will get at most nine points finally, in fact the Matildas are already finished.

As for China, even if they beat Australia smoothly in the next match to get eight points, they still have to beat Japan to book a ticket with 11 points. Of course there's another possibility: if Japan loses to DPR Korea, China may accept a draw with Australia, and a win against Japan in the final match may send the host through with nine points.

China will play Australia on Sept 8, and will challenge Japan three days later.

China failed to qualify for the FIFA Women's World Cup for the first time in history in 2010. If the "Steel Roses" cannot go to London, it will certainly be a heavy blow.
