Everton manager David Moyes admits he is having to construct a new side from resources within the cash-strapped club but is pleased with the way it is shaping up.

Having sold Mikel Arteta, Jermaine Beckford and Ayegbeni Yakubu and allowed Joseph Yobo to go out on loan the Scot was only able to bring in striker Denis Stracqualursi and winger Royston Drenthe on temporary deals. That has meant he has had to use more back-up players but he has been rewarded with some promising cameos from teenagers Ross Barkley and Apostolos Vellios."I'm having to look to try to build a new side from what we've got, not necessarily with lots of new players," said Moyes. "I need to get myself in the right position in the league but also need to see where we can take it on and try to find the new (Tim) Cahills."Barkley, 17, has already impressed in all four of the Toffees' matches so far while Vellios, 19, made his first appearance of the season - and only the fourth of his Everton career - as a substitute in the 2-2 draw with Aston Villa. The Greek youngster was only on the pitch for five minutes on Saturday but almost scored twice.Moyes added: "If people hadn't seen the Greek boy (Vellios) who came on they'd say 'Boy oh boy, you're not the worst are you? You've done okay and were unlucky not to get one or two goals'. And we have another couple who are similar to that."The problem is if you are trying them out in the Premier League it's a risk and at the moment I'm risking them.

"Ideally you would go and get them Championship experience so they know what the speed is like and the game is like and what they have to do. But because of our numbers we have to use these boys either in the team or to fill out the bench."
Moyes also had praise for midfielder Marouane Fellaini, who at 23 has been one of the team's key players for a couple of seasons now.

"I've said all along I think Fellaini is a really good player in the Premier League," Moyes said on evertonfc.com. "And he's young. He's only 23 now so you think what he could be like when he's 26 or 27, but we think he's already come on a lot."

Roberto Mancini insisted his Manchester City side still need to improve - despite easing to a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Wigan

Sergio Aguero's brilliant hat-trick secured the win while City, inspired by David Silva in midfield, could afford to see Carlos Tevez miss a penalty and still take three points.

Mancini said: "We had 15 chances in the first half and we scored only one goal - this is a problem because the game can change any moment."
He added: "Next time it's better if we close out the game in the first half.
"We need to improve because we have started the season very well but the season will be long. If we want to arrive at the end of the season still at the top we need to improve."

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez claimed his players had shown City too much respect.
Martinez said: "I am disappointed with the performance. We showed them too much respect.

"With the quality they have on the pitch and the size of the squad will allow them to be competitive in every competition but in one game you are only playing against 11 bodies.

"We played the occasion too much, we played their squad, when we only had to focus on the 11 players in front of us. We could have hurt Man City a lot more.

"From our point of view it is a real lesson but we still did a few good things that we are going to take into future games."

Defender Gael Clichy is confident Manchester City can make a big impact in their maiden Champions League campaign.

City make their long-awaited entrance in Europe's elite club competition on Wednesday as they take on Italian side Napoli in their Group A opener at the Etihad Stadium. Roberto Mancini's expensively-assembled side have made a flying start to their domestic campaign and summer signing Clichy expects that to continue.

The 26-year-old former Arsenal player said: "I am lucky enough to have been able to play in a few Champions League games for Arsenal, which was good, but I am aware it's a new competition for this club. The confidence is there, and we go into this competition with no fear."

"It's not only me who has played in it before - Yaya (Toure) has won it.

"For us it may be one more game, like many we have played in the past, but we have to be aware it's a big part of City's season this year.

"We have to make sure that if there is something we can bring in terms of experience - and it may just be a little thing - that we bring it.

"Then maybe we can make the kind of statement in the Champions League we have been making since the start of the season."

City will also play German giants Bayern Munich and Spanish side Villarreal during the group stage. The group is considered one of the toughest in the competition and Clichy has brushed aside suggestions Napoli, third in Serie A last year, will be the easiest of the opponents.

"That is the view of people who don't really know about football," said the Frenchman. "They are a strong side, and if you are at this stage of the competition and in the group, it means you have qualities.
"Champions League is a totally different kind of football."

Button it, Torres! Chelsea boss raps star striker over attack on team-mates.

Fernando Torres faces a reprimand from Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas over public criticism in which he accused his team-mates of being 'old' and 'slow'.
Villas-Boas is investigating the comments, which appeared on Torres' official website last weekend and were taken from an interview he gave in Spain.
'We are going in-depth to regain the tape of that interview,' said Villas-Boas. 'He says he didn't say that. We will see if things play exactly as they are in that interview.'
It is another setback for the misfiring £50million striker, who has scored only once in nine months since arriving from Liverpool.
Villas-Boas insisted he would not hesitate to punish a player for public criticism. 'If it's unauthorised, I'd fine him,' he said but, as this was an authorised interview, the striker can expect to escape with a verbal rap.
In the interview for the La Liga website, later translated for the English page of the player's website, the Spaniard said: 'The kind of player Chelsea has, an older player who plays very slow, who has a lot of possession, and that's what the club is trying to change now. It's normal that it takes some time.'
He goes on to claim the signing of Juan Mata will ease the problem, saying: 'The arrival of Mata is going to give another pace to the team. That's something Chelsea lacks nowadays.'
Villas Boas added: 'People have different views on different things. It's nothing abnormal in that situation. Maybe we just have to speak about that situation and he has to see our view as well.'
Torres' travails show no sign of abating, the 27-year-old losing his place in the side for Saturday's Barclays Premier League win at Sunderland, having also failed even to make the bench for Spain's European Championship qualifier against Liechtenstein.
Villas-Boas did not offer Torres an explanation, having admitted 48 hours earlier that he would not hesitate to drop the striker if it benefited the team.
'I just made the changes,' said Villas-Boas today as he pondered whether to recall Torres for Tuesday's Champions League opener against Bayer Leverkusen. 'I think any player who's not part of the squad or the selected players is not happy.
'I'm glad because maybe you can stimulate them to go one step further, or motivate them a bit more.'

Cautious United leave Ferdinand at home for Champions League clash at Benfica.

Rio Ferdinand will miss Manchester United's opening Champions League game against Benfica in Lisbon.
Ferdinand was not in the 19-man squad that flew to Portugal on Tuesday morning, meaning United were without their first-choice central defensive pairing as Nemanja Vidic is currently missing with a calf problem.
There was no place either for Federico Macheda or Mame Biram Diouf, who scored twice for the reserves in their win over Fulham, but Jonny Evans and Patrice Evra shrugged off hip and knee knocks picked up at Bolton on Saturday. It is not thought Ferdinand has suffered a fresh injury. However, after making his first appearance in a month during the 5-0 romp at the Reebok, and with Chelsea due at Old Trafford on Sunday, Sir Alex Ferguson is not wanting to take any chances with the 32-year-old, whose fitness record has been patchy over the past few years. With Ferdinand out, it is likely to mean a move into central defence for Phil Jones, outstanding at full-back on Saturday, who would be making his debut in the competition.
Michael Owen, fresh from watching his horse Brown Panther finish second in the St Leger, was also named, although if changes are made to Ferguson's attacking line-up, last season's joint Golden Boot winner, Dimitar Berbatov, would appear to have more of a claim.
Ferguson has suggested he will rely on experience, which could be good news for Darren Fletcher, Park Ji-sung and Ryan Giggs, who have been reduced to peripheral roles so far this term.
The United boss must also decide whether to hand Anders Lindegaard his competitive debut, or stick with David de Gea, who has been steadily improving after a shaky start to his Red Devils career.
It is less than four months since Ferguson's team were put in their place by Barcelona in the final at Wembley. However, as comprehensive as that defeat was, Michael Carrick refuses to beat himself up about it. 'The Champions League final doesn't still hurt,' said the 30-year-old. 'It was disappointing because we lost the final but it wasn't a massive failure.
'I haven't watched it again. I went on my holidays and focused on this season. You have to accept they were good. It is up to us to be better.'

McIlroy jealous of the amateurs as Walker Cup gets underway at Royal Aberdeen.

Rory McIlroy has written a personal good luck letter to Britain and Ireland’s Walker Cup team telling them he is ‘jealous’ of what they have to look  forward to when they take on the Americans at Royal Aberdeen this weekend.
The 22-year-old with the millions, the major and the celebrity girlfriend wrote: ‘Here I am in Holland playing in the rain and you guys are about to have one of the best weekends of your life. That’s how I remember my Walker Cup experience and I didn’t play on a winning side! I’m jealous. I hope it all goes well and look forward to you lifting the Walker Cup on Sunday.’
McIlroy’s letter was one of a number read out by home captain Nigel Edwards on Friday as he prepared his team for an uphill task against a strong American side.
World No 1 Luke Donald, who won seven points out of eight in his two Walker Cup appearances, Lee Westwood and Open champion Darren Clarke also took time out to compose their good luck messages.
World No 2 Westwood told the team: ‘You are already ahead of me since I never played in the Walker Cup but I know from Ryder Cup matches how special these team events are in golf. Remember to play your own game and don’t worry about the opposition.’
One man who will not be doing that is self-assured Englishman Tom Lewis, playing in his last amateur event before joining the  professional ranks on Monday. He will partner Scot Michael Stewart against Peter Uihlein and Harris English Saturday’s opening foursomes match.
